Simple Basmati Rice

Basmati rice, a long grain rice grown in Northern India, is aged for 2-3 years to develop flavor. We like to serve this rice with an intense fragrant curry like the Kerala vegetable stew or a hearty meat stew.

makes 2 cups

1 cup basmati rice

1 ½  cup water

Optional toppings:

Olive oil

Lemon juice

Lime juice

  1. Rinse the basmati rice in cold water 2-3 times. Soak for about 30 minutes to an hour.
  2. In a  medium sized stockpot, combine the rice and water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes or until the rice is dry. Turn the heat off and let the rice rest for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Stir it gently with a fork.  Top as desired or eat it plain.
